Chapter Twenty-three

“I’m on board with lying.”

Cole made it to Aziz’s family den. He banged on the door and called out twice before the door opened and Kohu shrieked at the pair of them. The rest of the brood had already packed into a travel pod but Kohu wasn’t leaving without Aziz.

“M-my Karfili! I-ah.” They staggered and clutched at their chest in agony. Their scales bleached white with red scales speckling across their whole body. “You’re in p-pain. I can’t-I can’t.”

“Aziz needs a doctor.” Cole winced under the strain of carrying his taller lover and the white-hot throbbing of his broken wrist. Kohu was right, he was in pain, and he wanted to throw up and scream with it. He would, the second he had Aziz safely with a doctor. “Hospital.”

“N-no we need to get to the shelter.” Kohu trembled and pointed back out to the street. “W-we need to get into a travel pod. I can put in our Kway-codes and we will be taken to the shelter. Aziz can be treated there.” Cole groaned and struggled to back them up and turn around. The idea of being out on the street with those red-clad Kathar made him numb with terror.

“My Kway is broken. Or I would have tried calling for a travel pod.” Cole grit his teeth as Kohu stumbled past him and onto the pavement. His skin was covered in sweat, his vision was blurred at the edges, and the pain was so much that he couldn’t stop tears from falling. Through sheer determination to get Aziz to safety, adrenaline, and endorphins, Cole was still conscious. He knew once his lover was safe, he would pass out.

“Thank you.” Kohu whimpered. They could feel just how much pain and how terrified Cole was, but also how bloody determined the human was to protect Aziz. They couldn’t express it right now through dealing with their own worry for their spawn’s wellbeing and the proximity to Cole’s suffering, but later they would thank him properly. There was no doubting their commitment to Aziz. The Tseka had clearly attacked them both, and yet Cole didn’t run in the name of self-preservation. Every moment out in the open like this put his life in danger. Kohu didn’t sense any pain coming off Aziz. They were just unconscious. Likely from the fatigue of going dark… “You love them.” Kohu didn’t ask, but stated, as they managed to force themselves to weather more of Cole’s pain to help carry Aziz. Oh thank God. Cole shuddered and whimpered with a drop of relief when he could lower his left arm and a broken wrist. Now he had his right shoulder and arm supporting Aziz and their left arm slung over his shoulders. Kohu took the other side and their pace doubled towards the travel station.

“Yes.” Cole swallowed thickly and his lips started to tremble. The fear of losing Aziz made his heart hurt almost as much as his broken wrist. “We have to get them to a doctor.
