Willow and Matthiel were waiting where I’d left them—as was, to my surprise, a rabbit girl.

Alex yanked me into the psyche to take my place. “Bianca…!” He rushed for her, flinging his arms round her and crushed the living Void out of her ribs.

“A—K-khaugh!—Alex?” Bianca gasped, arms trapped at her sides and voice cinched tight under his relieved grasp. “You are… here…!”

He held fast, his breath leaking away with a new ease that he hadn’t displayed in weeks. “Thank the Goddess… With the way things have been, I thought you’d…”

“You realize you’ve gained quite an audience?” I said from the psyche.

He found a number of campers staring at him, and grew rigid. He quickly ripped apart from Bianca. “I’m… Km-hmm I’m glad you’re all right. Yes.”

“Me too.” She latched right back to him, squeezing his ribs and forcing delighted chuckles from his throat.

She smiled briefly, but her expression soon soured, and she let him go—

Thwack!

She smacked him upside the head, demanding, “What the Death is wrong with you? I tried calling a thousand times! Do you have any idea how worried I was?”

He rubbed his new sore spot tenderly. “We ran into some trouble… Wait, what are you doing here in the first place?”

“Helping someone.” Bianca gestured to a Culatian girl behind her, whose face was scrawled with shock to see us. “Her friend was taken to Tanderam, so we’re trying to bust her out.”

Alex scrunched his brow. “That’s what we’re about to do for Jaq.”

“Jaq’s in there?” She gasped.

“Hopefully after tonight, he won’t be—”

“Ees wolf boy!” the Culatian girl exclaimed, pushing past Bianca to stare wide-eyed at us. She had rose-red eyes, the same hue as her scarlet feathers. “Halla’ech Skrii! Ees you really?! Ke, ke, ke, two color of the eyes and everything…!”

She snatched Alexander’s hand and shook it eagerly. “I can no be believing! I look so long, Külleschkov! So long for you!”

From his uncertain tone, it seemed Alexander shared my bewilderment. “And you are…?”

Beside us, Willow let out a shocked breath. “Zylveia?” Willow stepped closer to better see the Culatian girl’s face. “Zylveia Skrii’etey? Hozen tu?”

The bird shifter finally seemed to recognize Willow, and pointed at her with her mouth dropping in amazement. “Willow Ember?! Yebe hozen tu?!”

They babbled in that same gibberish for a while, until Alex shot a hand up to stop them. “Ladies? I don’t think anyone else knows what’s going on.”

“Yes,” Matthiel agreed impatiently. “You know this Sousül, Your Grace?”

Willow’s glance turned askew at us. “None of you recognize her? Why, this is…”

“Tovt, tovt, tovt!” The girl jabbered in Culatian, flailing her hands wildly to stop Willow. She spoke fervently in Culatian now, my ears ringing from how fast her tongue was moving.

Soon, Willow cleared her throat and tried again. “Er, very well… This is… Zyl. She’s an… acquaintance of mine. Apparently, her friend is in Tanderam also. She’s coming with us into the prison. Trust me, she’ll only help us with the rescue. She may be a great asset.”

Bianca puffed up her chest.
