Chapter Seventeen

TWO DAYS HAD passed since Case last saw or spoke to Rawley, and he was beginning to feel itchy. They had crossed each other’s paths or seen the other in passing almost every day since Rawley picked him up from the side of the road, so his man’s absence was noticeable. Case did see Jordan on a daily basis, however, and that only heightened his awareness that Rawley wasn’t around. Jordan couldn’t seem to get it through his head that Case was no longer interested. The infuriating man kept showing up at Aunt Sylvia’s front door. Hostess that she was, she always invited him in, asked him to stay for lunch or dinner, or suggested a hike around the property.

Case didn’t know what she was doing, considering she knew their history, but every morning, she would tell him there was no reason to be rude. Case scoffed at that. He could be mean, rude, and downright insulting—Jordan would still cling. Case’s bank account pretty much ensured the continued attention. His past actions didn’t help the situation. He’d frequently been hateful to the men in his life, only to turn around and give them exactly what they wanted—a hard fuck and a check. Jordan had no reason to expect anything different.

But things were very different for Case. He had left that life behind him and he didn’t miss it. The slower, easygoing nature of Clover City and its inhabitants was growing on him. The fact the town was more appealing to him now that he was falling head over heels for the sheriff was not lost on him. Unfortunately, the object of his affection had gone MIA. On the way home from the grocery store the day before, Case had stopped by the police station only to be told that Rawley had taken the week off. Hopeful they had a full six days to get to know each other, Case had driven to Rawley’s house to find the truck gone. It had been the same thing today.

Case was regretting his own words about them not being in a committed relationship because Rawley had apparently taken them to heart. He’d taken time off, left without a word, and Case had no way of contacting him. It once again occurred to Case that he needed to get Rawley’s phone number, but he kept forgetting to ask given the usual ease of finding the man. Confused and a little hurt, Case drove to the McKesson Farm in search of friendly ears and like minds.

Jake was driving out of the barn on the biggest tractor that Case had ever seen, and he waved as Case turned into the driveway. He saw Ryan on the far side of the barn chopping wood as he parked the car and got out. He inhaled the clean, fresh air, turning his face up toward the sun for a moment before heading to the barn. Case had no idea what he really wanted out of this visit, but these men were the only ones he’d become friends with in this town.
