An Academic Achiever

Robert “Bob” Hall was a standout student at Churchville-Chili Senior High.

The 1966 Saints graduate accomplished a school first when he finished his prep career in a three-way tie with Dick Utter and Larry Hirsch for class salutatorian. Each recorded a cumulative scholastic average of 90.92.

Betty McCarthy Capps was class valedictorian with a 91.38 average.

Hall was more than just an academic achiever, though.

He was also an actor, who was cast as the protagonist Peter Standish in the Senior Play, “Berkeley Square.” The play was directed by C-C English teacher Alyson Read.

Hall was also honored as Churchville-Chili’s Boys State representative during the summer of ‘65. Boys State is a “citizenship training program designed to instill responsibility and the principles of democracy in youth.”

Hall was also active in the school’s student council, French Club, AFS (American Field Service) club, and intramurals.

And...Hall was also a chess enthusiast.

What Hall, a North Chili resident, was not in any way, shape or form was a “promoter” of the Robert Hall clothing store in Rochester.

After college, Hall ended up as a professor at the University of California-Berkeley (near San Francisco).

In June of 1975, Hall was killed at the age of 27 in a light plane (Cessna 172) crash near Dine College (formerly Navajo Community College) in Apache County in Tsaile, Arizona. Also perishing in the tragedy were the pilot and two other passengers.
