It had taken Georgia at least three attempts to persuade her mum and Richard to go and dance. Richard’s excuse had been that he had two left feet and all the natural dancing ability of Teresa May, but Georgia knew the truth; they didn’t want to leave her sitting on her own, like a teenager at a school disco who no-one was interested in. But if people watching had been an Olympic sport, Georgia would have reached gold medal standard years before and she was more than happy sitting on her own as a result. It was fascinating watching how people interacted when they didn’t think anyone was looking. Ben was staying close to Ellie’s side and he’d stopped her climbing on a chair to fix the end of one of the strands of bunting that had come loose. Anyone who watched them closely enough would have been able to guess the secret they were still holding close for now – that Ellie was pregnant. Karen and Alan laughed together almost constantly, but then Karen had a Ma Larkin sort of quality, which meant she was almost always smiling and it looked like she could burst into peals of laughter at any moment. Alan had a much less cheerful demeanour when he wasn’t with Karen, but his whole face seemed to transform the moment he looked at her.

Now that her mum and Richard had finally taken to the dance floor, Georgia could watch them too. Caroline was leaning into him as he whispered in her ear, a slow smile spreading across her face. He’d been waiting on her all night too, getting her a drink if her glass was ever less than half full and standing up when she did, like a proper old-fashioned gent. Maybe some people would have called that sort of thing misguided, or even chauvinistic, but Caroline deserved to be fussed over. She’d spent nearly all her adult life caring for Georgia and putting her first, without anyone to lean on. This was her time and Richard was the right man for the job; Georgia was more certain of that than ever.

‘I see you’re indulging in your favourite pastime again. I looked over earlier and I was clearly the focus of some of your people watching. So what’s the verdict?’ Gabe came up behind her and she turned to look at him. She couldn’t possibly tell him the real verdict – that from watching him she’d realised he was the best person she knew. He put people at their ease and brought out the best in them, so he could capture a moment they’d treasure forever. Everybody warmed to Gabe and she’d seen three or four women desperately flirting with him, just during the time she’d been watching him. Not that he ever seemed to notice. Even if he had, he wouldn’t have done anything about it and that was almost certainly because of her. He was prioritising her, just like he always had.

‘Put it this way, I reckon you’ll hit your fundraising target.
