Gwen was sitting in the parlour, knitting, when Owein entered the house. She had a wonderful air of calm about her, and he hated the idea of upsetting her and destroying her mood. Perhaps it might be better if he were to wait, Owein thought, and talk to her some other time.

But then he reflected on the conversation he'd just had with Selwyn, and he realised that there was no running away from this situation. Selwyn was right, Owein thought: I need to talk to Gwen, and tell her the truth about what happened the day Rhys died. As these thoughts passed through his mind, Gwen looked up from her knitting and appeared to notice he that he'd just come in. 'You're late tonight, Owein,' she said. 'Why you're all covered in filth!' Although Owein had done his best to clean himself up, there was still a fair bit of mud on his trousers and jacket that he hadn't been able to get off.

He took off his cap and held it before him, gripping it tightly as though he were trying to wring water out of it. 'Had a bit of a to-do on the way back from the pub.'

'What kind of a to-do might that be, then?'

'With that bloody Geraint Deakyn.'

'Oh, with Geraint, was it?'

'Ay, it happens he's still sweet on you, Gwen.'

'Is he now?'

'Ay.'

'He knows we're married, though, doesn't he? I shouldn't've thought there was anyone in this village who didn't know that much about me.'

'Oh ay, he knows that much all right,' Owein said. 'I don't think he's very happy about it, though.'

'He's no need to be, neither,' Gwen replied. 'It's up to me who I choose to marry… What's it to him?'

'That's just what I told the lad.'

'So what happened exactly?'

'He was waiting for me and took me by surprise on the road back from the pub…we fought and I knocked him down.' Owein cringed before her as he continued to wring his cap. 'He started to accuse me of things and saying all sorts of lies about me…'

'What things would these be, Owein?'

'Lies…all of it's lies… He said he was going to tell you things to try and make you leave me.'

'What lies are they, then?'

'It's a long story, Gwen.'

'Well you'd better draw up a chair and tell it to me, then, hadn't you.'

'Ay, I suppose I had.' Owein sat in the easy chair by the fireplace.

Then he began to tell Gwen the truth about what had happened that day. He told her about how Geraint Deakyn had picked a fight with him down the pit, and how it had been Geraint that had caused the cave-in. He told her how he'd been going to tell everyone the truth about what happened, but then he'd decided against it because he hadn't wanted to give Gwen reason to be even more upset than she was. And besides, even though it was true that Geraint Deakyn had been to blame for what happened, it was him, Owein, that the lad was angry with and not Rhys.
