Christopher’s family were halfway through lunch by the time he reached home.

“Gosh, I’m hot,” he said, flopping into a chair. “Dave, fetch me a lemonade.”

“Well, and how did the riding go?” asked Mrs. Minton as she helped him to ham and salad.

“Oh, all right,” Christopher answered without enthusiasm. “The others are such a bore; they’re all so bad. You should have heard the fuss they made about cantering down one small hill. I can’t think what’s going to happen when we start jumping—if we ever do.”
