Caleb threw on his backpack and ran into the garage. Sam already had the snowmobile halfway out the door. Grabbing the other side of the handle, he pulled hard, yanking the vehicle outside.

Sam shoved his helmet into his hands. “I called Jeremy. The two SUVs belong to the FBI. Someone from Al-Nusra is on their way here. William and Jeremy are waiting for us at the ranger’s house.”

“Why don’t we stay here with the special agents?”

“It’s too dangerous.” Sam sat on the snowmobile and started the engine. “Are you ready?”

He nodded and pulled on the helmet. “Let’s go.” As soon as he was seated, Sam opened the throttle and flew toward the back of the property. When they drove past the first trees, he looked over his shoulder.

The headlights of the two trucks were close to the house. Sam swerved to the left and he tightened his hold on her. He didn’t know where she’d learned to drive a snowmobile, but she wasn’t wasting any time. Snow rose behind them, spraying like a waterfall through the air. They zigzagged through the trees, keeping as close as possible to the route they’d chosen.

The ranger’s house was close. The abandoned home would give them shelter, warmth, and a place to rest until they knew what was happening. He didn’t know how long they’d be there, but it was better than navigating the roads at this time of the afternoon.

Sam yelled something over her shoulder, but he couldn’t work out what she’d said. His grip tightened around her waist as she veered to the right, steering the snowmobile away from the house.

Where was she going?

They were heading into another clump of trees. He flinched, felt the sting of a branch as it whipped past his shoulder. More branches scraped his helmet.

Pain exploded in his arm. He glanced at his jacket, expecting to see torn fabric.

Blood.

The red stain grew and the pain tripled. Clenching his jaw, he desperately clung to Sam, hoping she turned toward the house soon. Without warning she veered left, pushing the snowmobile hard across the snow-covered ground.

Taking a deep breath, he ignored the sweat stinging his eyes. Every bump jarred his arm, sending a hot spear of pain through his body. He concentrated on Sam and holding onto her.

The ranger’s house was close. Caleb sighed with relief, but they weren’t there yet. This time, Sam stayed on course. She kept the throttle open, hurtling across the property like a Formula One driver, only slowing when they were hidden behind the house.

As soon as they stopped, she jumped off the seat. “I saw someone in the...” She looked at Caleb’s arm, then into his eyes. Without hesitating, she grabbed hold of him and helped him to his feet. “Hold on. I’ll get you inside.”

The back door banged open. Jeremy rushed down the stairs. “What happened?”

“Caleb’s been shot. I’m not sure where the shooter’s gone.”

As soon as they were inside, Sam led him into the kitchen. “Sit on the floor while I get the trauma kit.
