Monday’s are always hard. I have three classes, one in the morning, one in the afternoon, and one in the evening followed by a client with rigid TFL that needs soft tissue treatment. But today was especially hard. I know Sapphy was worried about the meeting she had with the investor this morning, and I worry for her. I found her office empty at lunchtime but hadn’t been too concerned. Sometimes these things run over. There really was nothing to be concerned about as the business was doing well. Better than well, it was already profitable, and I know from my own experience that isn’t easy to achieve for a start-up.

With the towels for the laundry under one arm, I use the other to switch off the light in the treatment room and make my way downstairs to reception. Abs looks up as I pushed through the double doors.

“That, you finished?”

I nod, stuffing towels into the bags ready for the laundry company to pick up in the morning.

“Is Sapphy in? I thought I’d just nip in and see her before I leave for the night.”

“She’s not been in all day. I’m supposed to be cooking dinner tonight for Hayley and Gracie, but I’m here covering her shift.”

“I can cover the last hour for you? I don’t mind.”

I’m shattered, but another hour will not kill me.

“It’s sweet of you, but no. I’m in the doghouse now, anyway. I’ll pick up some chocolate on the way home. That’s guaranteed to win around the women in my life.”

“I’ve never known Sapphy not to be in. Even on a day off, she’s in here. Did she call?”

Something was eating away at me. A gnawing feeling in my stomach.

“Not a message, not a call. It isn’t like her, but then again she was with Maura today, so shit knows what might have happened.” Abs rolls her eyes.

“Maura?” I’d heard that name before, but where? And then it hit me. That awful woman that draped herself around Sapphy at the opening night. Maggie had gone on for what felt like an age about how much she disliked the woman’s aura. “Maura is the investor?”

Abs stares at me. “You know Maura? Did Sapphy tell you about her?”

It would have been easy to play dumb and say I knew everything, hoping Abs would tell me more, but I don’t play games. Tempting as it might be.

“No, but I was with her till three this morning, helping prepare the figures for her meeting with her investor, but she never mentioned that was Maura,” I say feeling a little duped. Maybe she didn’t tell me because I didn’t ask. “I know how stressed she was about it. I’m worried, Abs. I tried calling earlier and I’ve left a couple of messages, but she hasn’t returned them. I’d really like to check on her. What number is her condo on Long Wharf?”

I knew the building that Sapphy lived in, but I’d never been to her apartment. Abs nodded. I wasn’t sure
