Chapter Twelve

COVEN OF SHADOWS

After Faye made her escape from Iris with her daughter, she found protection in a covenant near where she went to church growing up. When Faye arrived at the convent with her precious baby, the nuns welcomed and tucked them away for safety. The baby’s name was Grace, but it was there that she was given her nickname—a name that shone like a radiant gem in the light of day.

Each morning, the nuns washed her and prayed for divine protection to keep her safe. They ushered her into the hallowed sanctuary where an array of beautiful, colorful hues radiated from her in waves. It was as if she had been transformed into a living jewel—a Topaz that shone ever brighter in the early dawn’s glow. She became known as Topaz Morning among the nuns that safeguarded her.

As Topaz began to grow, it became clear that Topaz’s gifts went beyond what the nuns understood, though they never spoke of magic or the ability to see auras. But Topaz’s powers were undeniable. At a young age, she began predicting events with astounding accuracy, leaving all who watched in terrified awe. Topaz continued to amaze everyone around her with her otherworldly abilities.

The nuns at the convent huddled together in hushed concern, their contemplative faces etched with fear of Topaz and the unearthly power she possessed. Yet beneath the apprehension lingered a glimmer of awe and reverence for her gifts—a spark that no amount of shame or admonishment could extinguish. The nuns loved Topaz and believed her to be a gift from above.

In my family, we are all named after people from previous generations. My name, Lucinda, combines Lucrecia and Linda, my great-grandmothers on my mom’s side of the family. My middle name was Topaz’s given name, Grace. Topaz was practically family. Of course, I was always called Lucy, except for Granny Izzy, who always called me Lucinda.

My father, Jack, was named John after his father. He was the fifth John in his family line but the only one they called Jack. My sister Mia named her son John Jacob, but we call him Jacob most of the time. He only gets called by his full name when he’s in trouble, just like me when I was a kid. When my full name came out, I knew I was in trouble! My mother’s name, Kezziah, was from Izzy’s sister Kezzie and her husband and brother, who shared the same name, Isaiah. My father named Mia after his mother, Amelia, who always got called Mia as a nickname. Mia had Izzy’s middle name, Aliza.

Topaz held an irreplaceable place in our family. Despite not having grown up with her, Mia and I had heard countless stories of her—tales of how she used her power to save Izzy’s mother’s soul. Her absence on the day Kezziah was born was felt heavily by Izzy, who said she would often remind Topaz about it… giving her a hard time, of course. Izzy never told us why
