Chapter 6
Early the next morning, Mike and Jimmie and a boat load of armed men headed back to Picnic Island. Jimmie left his little boat tied to the little flotilla for the first time in months. The children were all happy to take care of the mutt that never had more attention in its life.
They moved slowly toward the partiers so as not to alarm them. They were also going at first light, figuring that all the partiers were down for a quick nap before rising at the crack of noon to begin their dancing all over again.
Mike was happy to be away from the throngs of people all looking to him for advice and leadership. Now, he just had ten men looking to him for orders. It was a much more manageable amount. Plus, he picked the people who were relatively quiet and calm. The talkers he left behind to protect the boats, the women, and the kids. He needed a break. Also, he thought a lot of the women would do a much better job of protecting than some of those he left in charge. Politics was a touchy game, and he had yet to master it. But, he thought he did best in this case by presenting it to the guys he left behind that they had a much tougher job than he did. They liked it, true or not, which was all that mattered.
The two boats they rode were moving slowly to the island. The absolute last thing he needed was for one of them to decide to open fire on him and begin a blood bath that they would definitely win. He decided the night before that they were going to play to win. And he had no qualms about returning fire and taking out these fools. What he feared though was the possibility that there were people like him interested only in protecting themselves from the Zekes. He didn’t want to take the chance of hurting them. Mike and his guys would be cautious.
They came from the east at a few knots, just cruising in to check the area. Jimmie was right. There was not much happening. There were dozens more little boats, some with a few people on board, than the last time he was here. The people didn’t seem to be particularly alarmed at his new boats entering their territory.
Mike saw all his guys were armed and ready. It just didn’t appear that any of them needed to be. There were no threats. He hoped this was going to be boring.
He gave the order, and they cruised around the island looking for any evidence of a threat. There wasn’t anyone around that didn’t look completely bored. It was as dead as a morgue, which he hoped this wasn’t. He rounded behind the island where it was too difficult for boats to navigate and remembered their execution of the child rapist. He wanted to feel guilty over the act, but didn’t. He just reasoned that they had saved countless children and actually felt good about that.
