Kris looked around the Clinton gym. Even on a cold January afternoon with snow in the air it was more than half full. For a junior high school game.

“Look at the crowd,” he whispered to Mason as the Tigers went through their pregame layup drill. “These folks must take their hoops pretty seriously.”

“Really seriously,” Mason answered.

The Clinton Dragons showed how seriously they took the game by jumping out to a quick 8–2 lead with a bunch of fast breaks and easy layups.

Coach Davis bounced off the bench with his hands in the form of a T.

“Time out,” he called. The Oak View team straggled off the court.

Kris looked around the huddle. The starters looked angry and confused. They were barking at one another.

“Come on, we’ve got to tighten up our defense.”

“Watch the passes. These guys are quick.”

“Call out the picks.”

Coach stepped forward and raised his hands. “Everybody stop talking and listen up. Forget the man-to-man defense. Let’s try a 2–3 zone.” He drew the defense on his tablet.
