âWhat do you mean?â Susan could barely release a word from her mouth. The cold temperature was torturing her body, like a sharp stabbing pain.
âOur friends live in the walls. They are the ones who give us power and money. We give them our food.â
Susan was drowning in confusion. âI donât understand.â
âThat boy who was your friend, the friends are going to eat him too.â
Silence consumed the entire room. The cool air hurried into Susanâs mouth, which remained open to its maximum capacity. Her eyes were another story; they spun out of control, as did her thoughts.
âIâm confused,â she turned her head to face Stephen. He was just sitting on the ground, his legs now crossed like a kindergartener's, and the edges of his lips met his ears in an ugly smile. âWhat are these friends?â
âTheyâre from the other side.â
âQuit being poetic and answer the damn questions. Are they people? Why are they living in the damn walls?â
âWe gave them permission to live here instead of hell. They are demons.â
âThis is bullshit. You expect me to believe that there are demons in this house? The only demons that live here are you people.â
He shrugged his shoulders. âBelieve what you want to. We are in America. Nothing is too far-fetched or crazy here.â Stephen could practically hear the sound of Susanâs heart beating. âMost of us are going to hell because of our sins. Why not make the most of our life and have a little fun before we die?â
âPeople have morals.â
âWe donât. Ma and Pa even shot my older brother dead.â
âOh,â Susan could see the pain in Stephenâs eyes. They watered up before allowing a tear to leave his right eye. âDo you miss him?â
âFuck yeah, I do. Every day. Iâd trade places with him if I could.â
âWould you rather be with him or your mom and dad?â
âHim! No questions asked.â
Susan smiled.
She realized she shouldnât press his buttons. They were silent for what felt like hours. Stephenâs face pointed directly to the floor, and his right index finger and thumb kept pinching his big toe. He reminded Joy of a child in kindergarten.
âUh,â she whispered, feeling the cold air gnawing at her, each icy breath stealing more of her warmth, pulling her closer to the brink of hypothermia. Her feet throbbed, swollen and numb, as the cold crept up the fabric of her pajamas, the icy fibers clinging like leeches to her already frigid skin. âDo you ha-have any... h... hobbies?â
âI li-like drawing. And I li-like reading.â His voice trembled, echoing in the oppressive silence.
âOh really? Me too. What-t-t do you like to read?â she forced herself to engage, her teeth chattering uncontrollably.
âMy si-isterâs wri-iting. She-eâs re-eally talented.â His words came out in short, breathy spurts, barely audible over the howling wind outside.
âI bet. Can I read you, y-your fav-vorite story? Go and get it, and bring it here.â Her voice wavered, a mix of desperation and feigned warmth.
âWhy?â He murmured softly, suspicion tinged with curiosity.
âItâs good to be nice, and I think youâll enjoy it.
