Matt sat next to her and rubbed her back. “No. Mrs. Klobitzki seems like a very nice, sweet, old lady, but she’s not above a bit of manipulation. She knows we can’t guarantee anything, but maybe she thinks we’ll try harder knowing she expects us to help.”
“I suppose so. But I do feel for her. For Cissy, too.”
“I know. I do, too. And we’ll do what we can for them. We’re not going to put either of them out on the street with nowhere to go.”
“Can you promise me that?”
The comforting hand on her back stilled and she felt him tense.
“Wait,” she said. “I’m sorry. That’s not a fair thing to ask. Of course, you can’t guarantee how anything will work out.”
“I can’t,” he said. “I can only guarantee my effort. And to echo Mrs. Koblitzki, that’s all anyone should ask.”
Unfair though it was, she wanted more. From him. And from herself. It felt like she’d made a commitment. A lot of them. And she doubted her ability to keep any of them. If this was a test, it might be just as much one for her as well as him.
He withdrew his hand but turned toward her on the couch. Reaching up and out, he rested his palms on her cheeks. He leaned forward and met her lips with his. Sweet warmth flooded her, flowing from where their mouths touched. The kiss went on for a while, starting gently but getting more insistent. Sam put a hand on his neck to draw him even closer and worked her fingers into his hair. She wanted more of him.
After a few minutes he drew back. Their lips no longer touched, but his face stayed close enough that she could see the flecks of copper and gold in his brown eyes. Dark whiskers shadowed his lean, strong jaw. The tiny smile on his lips had shades of sadness as they stared at each other. Then he pulled her into a hug that left her head resting on his shoulder.
“Don’t take too much of this on yourself. You can drive yourself crazy trying to solve everyone’s problems. You have to take care of yourself first. It’s good to be concerned for others, but you can take it too far. Of course, I’m coming from the other direction, just beginning to re-learn caring about others I have to say—this waking up or coming alive again business is kind of painful. Like the way your foot feels after you sit on it the wrong way and cut off the circulation? I’m having that pins and needles sensation, only in a more mental way. Letting people and their emotions, feelings, actually reach me again sort of pokes and stabs. I’m glad of it in one way. There’s a bit of real happiness, even joy, like I haven’t experienced in years, with you. But some of this new sensitivity isn’t easy to deal with. Some of it hurts, too.”
She wrapped her arms around him. She let herself lean against him, absorb some of his warmth and strength.
