“TURN RIGHT IN eight hundred feet,” the machine said.

Keith made the turn.

It was still light out. Still early. Sorta. Since she hadn’t slept the night before, it felt very late. But Helen reminded herself to just relax and not get grumpy.

She saw two girls walking down the street. They were in bathing suits. She laughed.

“Those can’t be the same girls,” she said. “Is walking around in your bathing suit, like, a thing in the Midwest? I thought it was supposed to be all old fashioned out here.”

Keith didn’t respond.

“We should get some snacks and go for a hike,” she said. “Have a picnic.”

“I don’t think there is anywhere to hike around here,” Keith said. “Besides, look at that sky.”

“It’s looked like that all day and we’ve seen nothing but a little rain.”

“If I see anywhere to hike, I’ll pull over.”

“Hey, honey, how far away did it say this motel was?”

“Ten miles.”

“You sure? We’ve been driving for more than ten miles.”

“I don’t know, Helen. We’ll get there soon. Besides, we’ve gotten side-tracked looking for food.”

“Maybe we’ll just find someplace near the motel.”

“I guess.”
