The Apostle knocked on Eve’s door, expected her to be there. But he hadn’t seen her silver Honda in the parking lot. Still no answer, so he knocked again, louder this time, pounded his fist right below the number 307, causing the loose gold numerals to shake and rattle.

When there wasn’t any sign she was in, he unlocked the door with a key she’d given him. He stood in the living room a few seconds, tried to tell if anybody was inside. But it was quiet. He didn’t hear any movement coming from the rest of the apartment, so he flipped on the light. The place smelled of her flowery perfume and lightly of cigarette smoke. He’d never stopped to notice the little details of the apartment before, like how it smelled. His focus was always on her when he came over.

The Apostle walked into the bedroom, confirmed Eve wasn’t home. Where was she? It was four in the morning, and her show had to have ended a couple of hours ago. Which meant she should’ve been back. For a second, he worried something might’ve happened to her. He knew the kind of punks she performed for at the club. Wouldn’t be hard to imagine one of them getting ideas, going after her. But his concern didn’t last long. No, no, that wasn’t what he saw going on here. He inspected the bottles of stage makeup on her dresser, tossed one in the air, then caught it. Did that over and over while he thought about her. Yeah, he could see her real game. First, she’d found out who he was and that he’d done the arson. Then she confronted him about it right in this room, last time he was here, tried to get him to admit it to her. He left without confessing, but she must’ve known that her employers were after him. And despite that, she was still working for them. Lewis had sold him out, and that was how Vignali had found him at the motel. But did Eve have a role in this, too? She knew personal information about him—where he lived, what his life in Charlotte was like, places he frequented. She was in a position to share all that with her bosses. They’d given her the job she’d always wanted. So, how far would she go to keep it?

Maybe he had it all wrong. But he had to know if she was helping them, betraying his trust. This woman he thought he loved.

The Apostle came back into the living room, shut off the light. He sat low on the couch, in the dark, thought about what he was going to say to her when she walked through the door. He’d ask her straight up if she was working against him. No, he’d hit her with a line first, take control from the second she came in.

Maybe he’d go, “Honey, people who screw me over this bad never live long enough to do it twice.
