SHO COULD SENSE THE MOMENT realization hit Naoki:

That when they had been so close, while Naoki had been confused…

Sho had been very certain of what had hung unspoken in that breathless moment between them.

But those had been the wants of a boy, and no matter how wicked he’d felt for his longing he’d had no idea, then, how chaste and pure those wants had been; how wanting to hold Naoki, to just barely touch lips to lips, had consumed his every thought and yet would grow and grow and grow as he grew and grew and grew until the sweet wishes of a child just discovering himself had become the heady, hungry desire of a man who knew, much better now than he had then, exactly what he wanted from Naoki Okubo.

And he thought of Father Robert saying When I was a child, I spake as a child, but they were children no longer and the flushed, nervous, beautiful thing in front of him was every inch as much of a man as Sho.

“…you remember that day?” Sho asked, and breathed in the rough scents emanating from Naoki, the shyness and the curiosity and the yearning.

“I…I remember.” Naoki toyed with the neck of his shirt, tugging and stretching it, drawing Sho’s attention to the hollow of his throat; the rapid flicker and tremble of his pulse. “I remember how close you were…and I think…that was the first time I noticed just how red your lips were.”

Sho couldn’t help himself. He leaned in; leaned closer, the tether Naoki had on him growing shorter and shorter, and sweet Nao didn’t even realize he was reeling Sho in and igniting him with every uncertain glance, every nervous gesture.

“So you were thinking about it, too.”

“Not quite.” And just like on that day, Naoki licked his lips and left them shining, tempting, parted and full. “I was still…kind of…” He fumbled, gaze skating to the side and down. “I didn’t really have words for things yet. For…for the things I wanted, and the things I was thinking about you. I couldn’t look at them head on and I was too young to really sort it all out, you know?” He let out a shaky, embarrassed laugh and skimmed a hand back through the wind-ruffled black fluff of his hair. “It was just this formless thing that I couldn’t even picture or put into words. I didn’t realize what it was until later.”

“What about now?” Closer. Still closer, Sho just couldn’t resist, and he nudged his knuckle under Naoki’s chin, just the lightest push, asking Nao to look at him—just look at him, and let Sho see those endless eyes. They were the same as the waveless ocean: black and still and so very deep. “Do you have words now?”

Slowly Naoki looked up, watching Sho in that utterly enticing way from under the straight, downward-sweeping fan of his lashes; he drew his lower lip between his teeth, sucking at it fretfully, and Sho nearly groaned with the ache to do the exact same thing.
