Anyway, there she was in the funeral procession – angry and sad and poor and hopeless, all at the same time. And I was there, too – obviously – bouncing around in my open coffin as my uncles and cousins carried me to my grave. There was a huge crowd – I guess they felt really sorry for my mum. And then all of a sudden, this rabbi called Jesus appeared out of nowhere, walked up to my mum, and said, “Don’t cry.”

Now, I don’t know about you, but I don’t think that’s the first thing I would say to someone at a funeral. Particularly a total stranger. I think I would say something like “I’m sorry” or “What a shame”, or maybe I’d just say nothing at all. But “Don’t cry”? Don’t be ridiculous!

That’s exactly how my mum felt. At least that’s what she told me. She didn’t know whether to ignore him or spit at him or laugh at him. Or maybe just cry even harder. What she felt like doing was smacking him right across his rabbi face. But instead, she just looked down at the ground and said nothing.

You think that would have stopped the rabbi – dropped the hint that she didn’t really want him there; that his comment wasn’t exactly right for the occasion.

But no, he just kept going. He walked right up to my coffin and put his hand on it, as if he wanted the procession to stop.

Well, it stopped all right, mainly because everyone was so offended by what he’d done. I mean, what right did he have to burst into a funeral and disrupt everything? My mum told me that there was a lot of moaning and muttering at that moment. A bit of shouting and swearing, too. And apparently, someone had to grab hold of Aaron, our next-door neighbour, to keep him from doing what my mum had only thought of doing – and more.
