Once, my son Dash decided to play a prank on his teacher, Mr. Kropp. When Mr. Kropp got out of his seat, Dash zoomed to his teacher’s desk, dropped some tacks on his chair, and then zoomed back to his desk in a flash. There was only one problem—Mr. Kropp had hidden a video camera in the classroom. He took the video to Dash’s principal. Luckily, Dash had been moving so fast that you couldn’t even see him. Still, he risked blowing our cover with his little prank.

Helen and I had a long conversation about the incident. I have to admit I was proud of Dash. I mean, the kid had moved so fast that he hadn’t even been caught on tape! But Helen was much more practical than I was. She reminded me that my eagerness to relive my own glory days was preventing me from being a good dad. It also led me to risk my family’s undercover status by encouraging Dash to act out.

We talked about it, and Dash has learned to find positive ways to use his Super speed—without risking his undercover identity.
