“HEY BUDDY,” a voice said. “Are you asleep?”

I jerked upright, my wrist sore from supporting my head. “Oh shit,” I said, swiveling my head to see Jack standing above me.

“Long day?” he asked.

“I guess.” Still scrambled, I tried to hold on to the vision of the woman as she came, but as with most dreams, it was already fading.

“That’s game, set, and match,” a voice yelled from the court. “Nice game, Terry, but not good enough yet.”

“Hey, ladies,” Jack yelled. “If you’re not too tired, how about a set of doubles?”

“Sure,” one said. The one with the breasts and the incredible legs. “My name’s Terry and that’s Paula. Which one of you is the better player?”

“Actually I am,” Jack said, “so since you’re the winner, you take Jake, and I’ll play with Paula. We’ll show you two how tennis is really played.”

I watched all of this, the fog rapidly lifting. I grabbed my racket from the bag at my feet. Looking at the bag brought back shards of my foggy dream. Dream? Maybe. But could it happen? I ran out onto the court. “Hi. I’m Jake.”

She reached out her hand. “Hi.” We shook. “We can volley for serve.” She winked at me. “And loser buys drinks afterward.”
