TWELVE

One night wasn’t nearly enough.

Of course, it hadn’t really been just one night. It had been one month of living together, eating meals together, chatting about things like tidying the house together and putting Eugenie’s best interests first together. It was nights of hanging out on the sofa, watching junk telly, or texts from Heath letting him know a meeting was running late and he would be home when he could be, or him texting Heath to ask if they needed tea, because it was on sale.

And yes, it was one night of sultry kisses and a blow job that Aubrey still got hard remembering on top of that. It was the promise of everything that was to come as well.

So much more waited just beyond Aubrey’s reach that it took his breath away.

“I miss him so much!” he declared, far too loudly, as he and Eugenie walked through St. James’s Park on Friday, Ulrika and Lindsey and their kiddos with him.

Ulrika and Lindsey paused in the middle of the conversation they were having about something Ulrika’s bosses had done—he was so caught up in his feels that he couldn’t even pay attention to juicy gossip from the other nannies anymore—and stared at him.

Then they burst into laughter.

“I knew it would come to this,” Lindsey said, shaking her head at him as she laughed.

“What’s funny, Nanny?” Lawrence asked her from his buggy.

Aubrey winced. He’d thought all the kids were asleep now, after they’d spent about an hour chasing after the ducks at the Buckingham Palace end of the park, then getting ice cream.

“Nanny Aubrey is being silly,” Lindsey explained to him.

“Oh,” Lawrence said, then laughed as if he got the joke.

Maybe it was being laughed at by a five-year-old, but that felt like the moment when Aubrey knew he had to stop avoiding things.

“It’s hopeless,” he said with a shrug and a sigh. “I’m in love with him. I have broken a nanny’s first oath of office by falling in love with my employer.”

Lindsey and Ulrika were still laughing at him as they all pushed their buggies through tourists and joggers and dozens of other people who paid them no mind, even though the conversation was about to get interesting.

“There is no nanny oath of office,” Ulrika said, then added, “Thank God. We would all be in violation of it at every turn if there was.”

“That’s the truth,” Lindsey said, slightly more sympathetic. “I had such a crush on the father at my last placement. He was a Greek shipping tycoon with an office here in London, and he looked like one of those sexy, ancient statues. The family took me with them to Corfu on holiday last spring, and you should have seen what he looked like, all oiled up with sunscreen, lying out in a tiny little swimsuit.”

“As much as I would love to fantasize about Mr. Gabris right now,” Ulrika stopped her from going on, “we’re listening to Aubrey getting all wet for Mr. Manfred right now.”

Aubrey scowled at the cheeky look Ulrika sent him.
