Chapter 3

When I started traveling for work, I thought it would be great. Fly around, see new places, meet old friends. I often added two or three days to a trip. However, over time, traveling becomes more of a burden. You try to make it as easy as possible for yourself. Travel during off-peak times, take the earliest flights as these are most likely to be on time. Take things easy.

The next step is to just get it over with. Get up early in the morning (or two hours earlier), drive to your customer, tell him you have to be away by 3:00 p.m. and drive home the same day. No overnight stay, no meals out. Just do it and get it over with. You don't save money (well, you do, but that's not the purpose), you keep your sanity.

Unfortunately, I was suddenly drawn into an escalating situation with a customer who was more than willing to pay the usury we charge for emergencies, and I was stuck in Tucson for a full seven days, including the weekend. Wednesday through Wednesday what shit. There are worse places, far worse. But I didn't want to be there.

The good news was that the job was strictly nine to five and I was able to devote the early mornings and late afternoons to health and fitness. The region is also very well geared towards a healthy diet.

I ate healthy, exercised, and dreamed of coming home to the different women in my life. I was slim like never before and felt pretty good about it. In the evening I might have a nightcap in one of the many places available, but I didn't chase after my skirts and stick to a scotch straight. Maybe a cigar when I was feeling stressed.

When it came Wednesday, I really wanted to go home. I was still working until 2:00 p.m. before I could catch a flight home that arrived quite late. It was a long damn week and I was exhausted.

My wife was kind and generous, received me at home and let me go to bed without complaining.
