Chapter 6

“No, absolutely not,” Cass decreed at dinner.

“Now wait a minute, Cass,” Shem said softly. “You don’t know what it’s like to live your life like this. I’d take the chance.”

“What?” Curtis bellowed… And off everyone went. The shouting, yelling, and someone broke something, was deafening.

“And you thought telling my family was a good idea why again?” I grumbled, sitting back in my chair.

“For one, I didn’t have access to the drugs I need that will knock you out,” Denver said in an amused tone. “Frost wouldn’t give me the key without Curtis’s permission. Secondly, we didn’t want to risk someone finding out and trying to stop it after I was already operating and risk you or ruin things.”

“Yeah, it sounded logical,” Hayden agreed, rubbing my arm. “Who knew your family could blow up like this though?”

“Me! Me! I did!” I playfully yelled as I raised my hand and waved it around. “I warned you.”

“—and having some crackpot doctor make all kinds of promises,” I caught Logan yelling. I was out of my seat and shifting to my half-and-half form in a flash, launching myself across the table. I caught the large vampire around the throat and threw him against the wall.

“You don’t ever speak about my mate like that,” I snarled in his face. “You don’t like this. Fine. No one fucking asked you. But you will be civil or you and I will dance and it will start a shit storm you don’t want.” When I was done, a pin dropping could have been heard it was so quiet in the room. “I can smell. Hayden’s almost back to himself. He’s not a crackpot. He’s a gifted doctor.”

“You’re right,” Logan sighed and went limp. He was submitting so I let him go. “I’m sorry, Cam, Denver, Hayden. I shouldn’t have said that and I don’t know you well enough to make any snap judgments.”

“I’ve been called worse,” Denver said lightly.

“This is happening. So either be supportive or stay the fuck out of our way,” I said loud enough so everyone could hear me. “I trust my mate. You don’t have to. You just have to trust me and that I’ve never done anything remotely crazy.”

“Like ruining your own sense of smell,” Rash reminded me gently.

“That was an accident,” I defended as I shifted back, my clothes in tatters. “Humans use that shit all the time and only have side effects after decades of use. There was no way for me or anyone to know that it would give me permanent damage.” I took a deep breath and calmed down. “And even that I don’t regret. I was useful in helping to disband the last circuses because I wasn’t fainting all over the place.”

“Would everyone at least promise to stay calm while Denver goes over the plan while showing the scans?” Hayden offered. It was hours after I’d claimed Denver and we’d done more scans. He’d also done them on Hayden so we had something to easily show the difference between healthy ocular nerves and mine.
