THE DOLLGIRLS

10

Research and development is almost always the best department to be in at any job. It’s where the creative ones are, the free thinkers. R and D is usually filled with the type of people who may or may not be sneaking out to the parking lot and getting stoned at the annual office picnic.

This holds even more true for those of us who are lucky enough to work at a toy company. I’m a handsome, rugged adult man, though at twenty three years old I’m still younger than most of my coworkers, and even I can’t avoid the childlike glee of spending all day at work playing with puzzles, stuffed dolls and building blocks. What a life.

Since we moved into the new office here at Toy Port, it’s gotten even crazier. Following in the footsteps of those tech startups that every young grad wants to work at these days, our new building has it all; Beer on tap for the employees, pods to take a quick nap during the work day, and Friday’s are devoted to working on whatever personal project you’d like. I think my parents are concerned, simply because their generation can’t even wrap their mind around getting paid to do such an inane task as dreaming up toy ideas.

I’m on break, grabbing some sushi in the company mess hall when I’m approached by a frustrated looking Garth, one of my favorite co-workers.

Garth is a particularly inventive guy and usually all smiles, but today he’s brimming with frustration as he sits down at the table in front of me.

“You gonna tell me what’s wrong?” I ask, popping a thin slice of tuna in my mouth and chewing slowly. After a long pause, I continue. “What’s up, Garth?”

He shakes his head. “Those fuckers up in accounting.”

“Oh no,” I say, already completely understanding. “ Did that new life-sized doll project go over budget?”

“No!” he shakes his head. “I mean, yeah, I guess. I don’t know. As far as I knew we had another two months of funding on that thing and then suddenly they just came in and pulled the plug.”

“Pulled the plug?” I ask. “On your dolls?”

“Yeah,” Garth nods behind his thick-rimmed glasses. “I came in this morning and all the prototypes were gone. They locked them up in the hazard room.”

The hazard room was a recent invention by the higher ups, one that still didn’t entirely make sense to me. Since moving into this new office complex, several of the toys in research and development have started malfunctioning, becoming hard to program and functionally inconsistent. Of course, nothing we’re working with is all that dangerous, so the need for these particular projects to be quarantined without warning is more than a little irritating. I personally haven’t had any of my own work confiscated to the hazard room, but I can imagine that I’d be just as frustrated as Garth.

“So what are you going to do?” I ask.
