“What can I get y’all to drink?” Marshall asks when our neighbors enter our family room. I’m in the kitchen putting the finishing touches on dinner, as nervous as a virgin on her wedding night. I force myself to go greet our guests.

“Dinner will be a few minutes,” I tell them as they all say hello. We chat about nothing until Marshall has the drinks made and everyone sits down on our sofa and chairs.

“Something wrong, Erin?” Lexi asks with a concerned smile. “You look anxious.” She exchanges a look with Sara and I almost decide right there to call the whole thing off.

“We’ve been talking about something,” Marshall says, possibly seeing what was happening by the look on my face. “And we’d like to get your opinion about it.”

“Let me guess,” Sara says with a smirk. God, I just want to slap her. The other husband’s exchange looks as well and I’m ready to scream. “You’re thinking about…” she says looking straight at me with a gleam in her eyes. “You’re thinking about coloring your hair.”

Everyone cracks up.

“No, seriously,” she adds, looking at Marshall when we all settle down again. “What’s on your minds?”

“Well,” Marshall begins. “I guess from what Erin has told me that it’s pretty much an open secret what’s been going on lately here in the neighborhood.”

Lexi flashes me a look and I nod. “And you’re interested?” she asks me and then Marshall.

“Maybe. We just want to get a feel for, I don’t know…” He struggles to find the right words before giving up and looking helplessly at me. Wonderful.

“We want to know how it’s going so far. For everyone.” I add. I look at Ted and Harlan. They exchange looks again and Ted takes the lead and speaks directly to Marshall.

“So far, it’s been good. Really good.” He turns to Harlan. “Wouldn’t you agree?”

“Absolutely, Ted. It’s been great.”

“No regrets?” Marshall asks.

“None,” Harlan states emphatically. “You?” he asks Ted.

“Nope. All good.”

“Shit,” Lexi says with a wicked smile. “Are you two just going to beat around the bush all night?”

“I think that’s Darnell’s job,” Sara says out of the side of her mouth. “Oh, did I say that out loud?” Everyone laughs again.

When the laughter dies down, I decide to get into the fray. “So, I guess the big question on everyone's mind is, how does this work? I mean, who initiates?”

“Well,” Lexi says. “I started it all when I just went over to Darnell’s house and put it to him, point blank.”

“And that was okay with him?” I ask.

“What do you think, Erin?” she asks with a sly smile.

“Okay, sure. But Sara? Did you do the same?”

“I sure did,” she says, reaching for her husband’s hand. “And then Harlan asked if he could watch, so I took the lead on that, too.”

“We’re thinking of taking things a step further,” Marshall says and I snap my eyes to him, shaking my head. “I mean, we’re thinking about…” But he fumbles again.

“Thinking about what, Marshall?” Sara asks.

I take over.
