Chapter Ten

“Thanks for helping me clean up. Again,” Steven said as he gave Anna Molly a hug. She held on to him longer than usual, the bag of assorted perishable foods he’d made up for her dangling from her fingers over his shoulder. He ignored how good she smelled, because the delectable scent wasn’t the whiff he got of her apple-scented shampoo. “And for helping me pick out the right color contacts online.”

“What’re friends for?” she asked as she pulled away. Her smile didn’t reach her eyes.

“We’re still here, for better or worse.”

“Then your experiment was a rousing success,” she said and moved over to give Dax a hug, too. “Don’t let him be so hard on himself. And remember, humans are people, not food.”

“I’m telling you, you ought to start a support group. Your uncle could tag along when he’s in town.” Dax winked at her and turned to Murphy as he grinned. But his smile faded as soon as he glanced at Steven.

“You’ll figure it out, Durant,” Murphy said. He clapped Steven on the shoulder affectionately, but gave Dax some space and waved to him instead as he headed down the two porch steps after Anna Molly.

“We’ll see you at school tomorrow. Bye, guys.” Dax waved to their friends’ retreating backs.

“If you need me, I’ll be in the lab,” Steven said and headed back into the house. He’d spent about an hour working on a couple of brews after Anna Molly had helped him tidy up. She’d magicked away all the traces of blood they could find and had even helped him take care of his bloody laundry with a few handy fabric cleansing charms. It was better than bleaching everything into oblivion.

“Do you want some help?” Dax asked and closed the door behind them with a click.

“No. Thanks.” Steven paused on the stairs and looked down over his shoulder, seeing Dax had followed after him. It felt like he was looking at a very sinister future for himself. The only thing that separated their points of view of human life were a couple decades of emotion-based memories. What happened if those feelings diminished? What if they were overpowered by his hunger? Steven didn’t want to be a monster, even if he did feel like a huge idiot.

“Let me know if you change your mind. I guess I’ll get started on my divination project.” Dax looked up at Steven with glassy puppy dog eyes.

It was the expression that usually melted Steven’s heart and settled his emotions to a dull roar, but now it only pissed him off.

“I’ll let you read my cards later,” Steven said. They needed a little normalcy back, and helping Dax get back on track with his school work would be a step in that direction. But not the same kind of normalcy they’d had the night before or early that morning. He was suddenly grateful their friends had shown up when they had or he might be more angry with himself.

“Good luck,” Dax said with a weak smile.
