“HICKORY DICKORY DOCK”
In the examples we have studied so far, force-driven patterns have elaborated tonic harmony, and have occurred essentially at one level of structure. In “Hickory Dickory Dock,” these patterns not only occur in different harmonic contexts, they also appear at different levels of structure. Example 7.2 gives the melody and a Schenkerian analysis. The discussion that follows shows not only how the piece is composed of the same force-driven patterns derived in chapter 6 but also how those patterns are combined in the same ways predicted in that chapter. Furthermore, those combinations reflect the combination of physical gestures in ways that can easily be mapped onto a simple story line that helps us attribute meaning to that melody.
