Chapter Five
Ilouka stood clasping her hands together and listening.
She could still hear Lord Marloweâs voice and he was still pushing against the door.
Although she knew now that, even if he did burst in, the Earl would save her, at the same time without realising it she was holding her breath until she heard his voice.
Then it came and, although she could not hear exactly what he said, she realised from his tone that he was being sharp and commanding.
She could hear Lord Marlowe expostulating. His voice was raised so that she could have heard what he was saying, but she was no longer listening.
Instead she was still standing dazed and immobile until finally she heard Lord Marlowe, grumbling and protesting, but moving away until his voice faded altogether.
Then she turned round to look towards the door that the Earl had entered her room by.
Vaguely at the back of her mind she supposed that there must be a sitting room attached to her bedroom as there was in the room that she had first been given.
She had very little time to think before the Earl came back and she thought as he walked towards her that he seemed to be taller and even more omnipotent than he had seemed in the dining room.
She thought perhaps it was because he was wearing not his evening clothes but a dark robe that almost reached the floor.
When he came to her side, she had intended to thank him.
Instead, perhaps because of the relief she felt that he had saved her from Lord Marlowe or perhaps because she had not been exaggerating when she said that she was very tired, she felt the room begin to swim round her.
She put out her hand to hold on to the Earl to prevent herself from falling.
âAre you all right?â he asked.
âI-I was so â frightened,â Ilouka replied incoherently.
âYou have had a long day â â
He picked her up in her arms, carried her to the bed and then put her down against the pillows.
As he did so, far away at the back of her mind Ilouka thought that he must think her very foolish but it did not seem to matter.
âGo to sleep,â the Earl suggested, âand I will say what I want to say another time.â
She wondered vaguely what that could be, but was really too exhausted to ask questions.
Then she knew that the Earl had moved from her bedside and was pulling the armchair back to its proper place from where she had pushed it against the door.
He also moved back the chair she had placed there first.
âY-you â donât think â Lord Marlowe will come â back?â she stammered.
âYou may be certain he will not do so,â the Earl answered.
âHe is â horrible!â Ilouka murmured. âAnd he â has had too â much to â dri â â
The last words faded away into silence and the Earl put the chair with the brocade seat down beside the bed and stood looking at Ilouka.
Her hair
