Bright pink dress: Wednesday

Tom should have been writing an email about the lower-than-usual level of applications for the coming academic year. He had plenty of ideas for things they could do to boost their numbers, but he had a bad case of the donwannas when it came to writing them down. His pencil moved across the page of his sketchbook as he drew the disapproving expression on the face of his black cat, Billy. Possibly Billy’s breakfast had been delayed by a few moments or hadn’t consisted of the right flavour of expensive cat food. Maybe Billy hadn’t wanted to be left alone when Tom left for work. Whatever, Tom was usually in the wrong when it came to the cat. Billy liked Charlie, he liked the twins, he liked Ann and Orianna; it was just Tom he disapproved of. Or so it seemed.

The phone rang. With a sigh, Tom pushed the sketch book aside in favour of a pad of lined paper.

“Tom!” Bryson Carroll shouted into his ear. “About this vote of no confidence against you."

“What vote of no confidence?”

“It’s only the staff trade unions. Nothing to worry about. The governors will support you whatever the result.”

“The unions are proposing a vote of no confidence in me?”

“Some of them. Hotheads. At the whole college meeting, yes. I assumed you knew. Like I say, nothing to worry about. Just Vitruvious and his friends causing trouble.”
