Caches snoop on that bus to detect update operations made by some other core to the memory.

Processors can update their caches based on the values snooped on the bus.

Remote memory operations between a cache and the main memory can occur when 1.a cache miss occurs and a cache line is brought from the memory or

2.a cache line is evicted from the cache and “flushed” to the main memory.

These types of transactions are significantly slower (150 ns in Intel and AMD multicore machines). Note that only one transaction with the main memory can occur at a given time. A memory transaction made by one core can be executed in parallel with local read/write/snoop operations in other cores.
