Chapter Thirteen
A Date
âI wish you would have let me take you somewhere... fancier,â Christian said, sitting across from Misty at a dining booth. Grinning, he shrugged and said, âDon't get me wrong, I love pizza, but I always figured we'd end up at a... a snazzier place. You know, something with roses or candles on the table. It wouldn't have bothered me to pay for it, either. I have some savings, you know.â
Misty smirked as she glanced around the restaurant. She found herself on a friendly date with Christian at a local pizza shop. Other couples sat at the other booths, some families sat at the tables, and groups of friends crowded the bar. It wasn't an elegant upper-class restaurant, but it wasn't a Chuck E. Cheese's, eitherâthere were no mascots or arcade cabinets in sight.
Misty's eyes stopped at Christian. He wore a casual blazer over a button-up shirt, slacks, and dress shoes. He was dressed for the occasion. She stared down at herself and smiled. For the first time since the attack, she wore a black, tight-fitting cocktail dress and matching high heels. She felt beautiful and comfortable.
She glanced up at Christian and said, âDon't worry about it. I actually really like it here. I prefer the... the simpler life. To be honest with you, Christian, if we went to a 'fancy' restaurant, I wouldn't even know what to order. Some crème brûlée? Or maybe filet mignon? Hmm?â
âI'll be honest with you, too: I've never had either of those. I think pizza was a good choice.â
The pair shared a laugh. Christian blushed as he took a sip of his beer. Misty simpered, amused by his bashful behavior. She looked around the restaurant again. There was a peaceful aura in the eatery. A few people bickered and argued, fighting about sports and politics, but that was part of life. Most of the families appeared to be happy.
She noticed a group of young womenâcollege students, surely. The pizza shop wasn't a traditional bar, so they weren't there for a party. They simply wanted to enjoy a meal before their night began. No one bothered them at the bar. Shady men didn't harass or assault themâno cat-calling, no touching, no rape.
Misty couldn't help but smile as she stared at the young women. Their safety made her happy. Christian furrowed his brow and tilted his head. He noticed Misty's smile, but he didn't know why she was smiling. People talk during dates, he thought, I should try to say something or this is going to get awkward.
He coughed to capture Misty's attention, then he said, âSo, um... It's been a pretty crazy year, right? The president is always on Twitter, Russians did this and that, politicians are arguing like teenage girls all the time... Madmen with guns are running out on baseball fields and shooting politicians... Others are shooting up concerts... Fascists are fighting fascists. Shit, it's all messed up, isn't it?â
Misty continued to stare at the young women. She unintentionally ignored Christian's political rambling.
