After midnight, the last log in the chiminea burned down to nothing more than a few brightly glowing embers among a pile of ash. Brody looked at his beautiful houseguest, who appeared tired yet comfortable wrapped in the blanket.

“A penny for your thoughts,” she said when she discovered him staring at her.

Brody shook his head from side to side. “Tired. Really tired.” He stood and stretched. “Maybe we should get some sleep.”

“I agree. Where am I going to sleep?” Memory stood and started folding the blanket.

“My room,” he answered.

She tilted her head to the side and gave him a playful expression. “Your room?”

Brody squinted and scratched the back of his head. “I mean that you can stay in my room, and I’ll sleep in one of the others.”

Memory stepped closer to him. “Nope. I can’t have that. I can sleep in one of the other rooms.”

Brody closed his eyes and shook his head from side to side. “No. Look, they all have king-size beds and adjoining bathrooms. My bathroom is just a little nicer, and besides, all your new clothes are already in there,” he said happily. The trained soldier purposely didn’t tell Memory that the master bedroom was safer and easier for him to defend. Brody didn’t know if the men who were after her would be able to find her, but if they did, he needed to be ready.

Memory smiled. “All right. I guess I’ll sleep in your room. I don’t think you’re going to let me win this argument.”

“Not a chance,” Brody replied and took the blanket from her hands. “Now follow me, if you would please.”

“Right behind you, sir.”
