CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Thea woke the next morning surrounded by soft, yielding white, and sat up in a panic, wondering if her wings had somehow reappeared during the night.
Heart thumping, mouth dry, she turned from side to side. She did not want to think about wings, of what having them meant.
There were no wings. She twisted her arms behind her back, checking, just to be sure, heart and breath returning to normal as her searching found nothing. No wings. Just endless white fabric. A mattress that invited her to lie back down and sleep some more and layers of gossamer-thin fabric that were light as air, somehow keeping her cool despite the summer heat.
It was a far cry from her own, much plainer, bed with its undyed sheets and blankets for cooler nights.
The room was almost empty apart from the bed. There was a large, comfortable chair and dressing table which held the pitcher and ewer she had used to have a quick wash the night before, and that was it. She had managed to remember to fold her uniform over the chair before getting into the nightshirt Niath had provided the night before and falling asleep almost as soon as she got into the bed.
He had mentioned something about a bathroom as well.
She forced herself out of the comfortable bed and across the room to the pair of doors she could see. One led into a walk-in wardrobe that was completely empty. The other led to a luxurious bathroom, complete with towels and an array of soaps that would keep even the fussiest lady happy. Turning one of the taps yielded a gush of hot water that was too tempting to be ignored. It was cool enough in the room to make a warm bath a pleasant experience.
Some time later, Thea was clean from head to toe, which was more than could be said for her uniform. She had put it on, not having any other options, trying to ignore the smell. Perhaps Niath would have a cleaning spell she could use.
Among the items that had been taken from her was one of Odiliaâs cleaning spells. Thea always had at least one cleaning spell with her uniform. A lesson learned early in her training when a would-be thief had tipped a wheelbarrow of rotting kitchen scraps over her. The Watchâs Mage was kind-hearted and generous, and happily kept Thea supplied with a variety of spells, occasionally offering new ones for Thea to test. Odilia had never asked for anything in return, seemingly horrified when Thea had offered some money.
Cleaner than she had been the day before, and rested, Thea made her way downstairs, noting details that she had missed the night before. Most of the doors she passed were open, and the rooms she could see were completely empty. There was no furniture at all. With no tables or chairs or beds or wardrobes to distract her, she had plenty of time to notice the high quality craftsmanship that had gone into the house.
