I thought that was cool of me, but then I couldn’t even see Clara for a minute, there were so many Wildcats around her. Then out came the puck, back to me. I was leaning on the wrong skate. I almost fell over. I stuck my stick out to hold myself up. It didn’t work. I fell on my stick. My stick hit the puck. I hit the ice. Wildcats laughed. Puckett Corner Pumas even laughed. Byron didn’t laugh. He made a goal.

“Yes!” said Stan. Byron jumped on me before I could get back up. The rest of the Pumas jumped on him. That was another thing Uncle Mike said: get right up. Then Byron made another goal. The buzzer went. It was a tie.

“Nice teamwork, Clara, Byron, and”—Mrs. Almonio checked her clipboard—“MacDougal.” She patted my cheek. Everyone laughed, but Mr. Noonan shook his head.

“Thank you, Mrs. Almonio,” I said, and shook hands with her.

“Morgy, hey, an assist,” said Mr. Noonan as we had hamburgers on the way home.

“They were just distracted by Clara,” I said.

“There you go,” he said, like that was my plan.

“Clara’s good,” I said.

“Getting there,” said Byron. He didn’t say “your girlfriend.” The hamburgers tasted great. My stomach was finally warming up, and the game didn’t even last that long. But I still couldn’t wait till Uncle Mike came back.
