Figure 10.4 gives an example of a representative fee table. In this case, the fund offers multiple share classes, each with distinct cost structures that feature varying expense ratios and loads. The dollar amounts you'll pay over various time periods are also shown under two scenarios—if you hold onto the fund shares and if you sell fund shares. As you can see, Class I shares, featuring an expense ratio of 0.99% and no sales charge, will be less damaging to your portfolio over time. In general, avoid funds with complicated fee structures and be equally wary of brokers pushing no-load funds with high expense ratios.

The prospectus fee table enables you to compare fund costs; the hypothetical examples enable you to see costs in dollar terms. Note that the prospectus fee table may include compensation paid to an investment advisor or financial planner, such as a commission or 12b-1 fee. It does not reflect other advisor-related fees, such as asset-based fees or hourly charges paid to a financial advisor.
