Chapter 12

“OH, FOR PETE’S SAKE!” Abbi pushed back from her keyboard. The insistent cock-a-doodle-doo of her ring tone was getting to her. “I really ought to change that to something less distracting... like silent mode. Hello?” she snapped.

“Hey, Mom! What’s wrong with you?” It was one of her sons.

“Lane! Nothing, uh, why do you ask?” she questioned suspiciously. Had he found out about her and Ben?

“No reason, it’s just you sounded a little perturbed.”

“Oh, sorry,” she giggled, with relief. “I’ve just been writing for days because my agent has been after me to get it done. How many times did you call me?”

“Well, that explains it. Just once. Why?”

“There were a few calls, so I just wondered. I’ll check to see who they were when we are through. So, what’s up?” she asked.

“Oh, okay. Anyway, I’m calling about our plans for the long weekend. Luke and Ava will ride with me. And maybe Cassie, I don’t know yet though. We should be up there Thursday afternoon.”

She rubbed the back of her neck trying to smooth the tension away. “Cassie? Who is Cassie?” she asked, confused.

“She’s Luke’s new girlfriend. They’ve been dating for like a week... kind of a floozy if you ask me. I told him that too, but you know how Luke is.”

She frowned. “Now Lane, that isn’t a nice thing to say.” Abbi was now concerned how he would react to Ben.

He snickered. “It’s true, Mom! He always gets with someone out of his league or after his money.”

Lane had a point. Now she was worried. “Ah, well, you know, it’s his life, he’s an adult. He can decide that for himself.”

“Where is this coming from? That doesn’t sound like you at all?”

“People change, Lane,” she said with a soft sigh. “Wait, did you say this coming Thursday... or next?”

“This.”

Impossible, it couldn’t have gone by that fast.

She grabbed the calendar off her desk and looked at the date on her laptop. Had she been so consumed with writing lately that she didn’t even know what day it was? It was this Thursday! It meant she hadn’t talked to Ben for five days.

She thought back to that last night they had been together. The night she had met Mark. Ben had been true to his word and kept his feelings and his hands in check. They ended it with a kiss on her front porch with neither of them wanting it to end.

After she had gone in the house with the dogs, little did he know, she stood watching him through a crack in the curtains from the front window. He sat on her porch step for a while before leaving. After fifteen minutes or so, he stood, paused on the top step, and glanced back at the door. It took every ounce of her willpower to resist flinging it open and dragging him into the house.

“Mom! Hey, are you there? Can you hear me?” Lane interrupted her musings.

She shook her head to clear her thoughts. “Yes, I can hear you.
