Chapter Seven

"Do I know you?" Duncan Hale's face filled the laptop screen. His hair looked more auburn than red and his eyes more blue than green. Still, his pale skin was so perfect Hunter almost thought he was wearing makeup.

"You don't know me," Hunter admitted.

"There's something familiar about you, though." Duncan frowned then offered up a half smile.

"I'm like you."

"Like me how?" Duncan's mistrust twisted his rounded features into something almost sinister. Suddenly, his eyes went wide and his mouth dropped open. "No."

"Yes."

"How did you… one moment." Duncan rose then disappeared out of range of his camera. A soft bang echoed in the room. From the sound, Hunter was pretty sure Duncan had just closed his office door. Duncan returned and settled in his seat. "How did you find me?"

"I met someone who knows you. Or rather knew you."

"What do you want?" Duncan crossed his arms protectively over his chest. Even with the expensive suit, Hunter recognized they had almost identical body types.

"I want you to lift the curse from Alexander Knapp."

Duncan laughed so hard and long he had to push his chair back from his desk because he doubled over.

Hunter used the time to steel his spine. "I'll pay you."

"What?" That cut the laughter off so fast it might have been comical had the situation not been so grave.

"I will pay you to lift Alexander's curse."

"No."

"You don't even know what I have."

"You're wearing a cheap polo shirt from a box store. The camera on your laptop is the second cheapest one manufactured. The wall behind you—look. My point is that a man like you doesn't have anything close to what that swindling bastard stole from me."

"I know exactly how much he took from you."

"Bragging, was he? Wait. How did you manage to get close enough to find out? The curse won't let him get anywhere near anyone."

"It doesn't seem to work on me." Hunter grimaced. "I see him for who he really is."

"Is that so?" Duncan inspected his fingernails.

"I also know the money isn't really the issue."

"No?" Duncan laughed again. "Then you must be a half-breed."

Hunter frowned. He knew he'd been insulted but wasn't quite sure why.

"A full-blooded leprechaun like me would never scorn that kind of money."

"I'm not disparaging it or dismissing it. I'm merely suggesting the real issue here is that Alexander broke your heart."

Duncan's upper lip quivered, twisting into a brief snarl before smoothing out. "I didn't love him."

"Only a lover scorned could inflict that vile of a punishment." Hunter expected Duncan to cut the call. His slender finger hovered over the button, but something—greed?—made him stay his hand.

"How much are you offering?"

"What you lost on the land deal."

"No."

"Double."

Pain quickly swallowed up a flicker of interest. Duncan had a good poker face, but money, especially a discussion about a lot of money, brought out his leprechaun instincts. What kept his greed in check was his broken heart. Five years later and thoughts of Alexander still had the power to hurt.

"How much do you have?" Duncan folded his hands together and lifted his chin.
