If we kept to the same speed as our pursuers, they would never catch us. But trying to do so was a losing strategy. With Thaddeus riding Bagarâs old, unnamed nag, we were pretty much guaranteed to have the slowest horse in either group. Which meant sooner or later, our pursuers would catch up.
The best we could hope for was to find a good place to set up an ambush, ideally with a few heavy boulders we could roll down on top of them.
Unfortunately, the land we were traveling was not hilly enough for such a useful geographic aid, and while the river had created its own gorge from time to time, the road inevitably followed the top of that gorge rather than the bottom.
As we traveled onward, I asked my companions a few pertinent questions. âCan you use that crossbow youâre carrying?â I asked Thaddeus.
But the annoying, overly talkative man shook his head. âI donât see well at a distance,â he admitted. âOr close up, for that matter.â
All at once, I understood the source of much of his clumsiness. But he hadnât finished. âI am okay with a knife, I guess, but I donât really like to get that close.â
Even as he spoke, I could hear his anxiety. Yet his answers werenât unexpected. Thaddeus Day wasnât much of a fighter.
âTamara?â I asked, speaking over my shoulder.
âI can do what I have to,â came the womanâs quiet, determined response.
I nodded grimly, understanding that if it did come to a confrontation, it would largely be down to me.
Which meant delaying that confrontation as long as I could, at least until the magic of my bracelet reset.
Thaddeus was doing his best to goad his horse into greater speed, but the old nag was either stubborn or largely incapable of much more than a walk. Probably a combination of both. Perhaps out of anxiety, the little man once more started to babble.
âHow many of them are there?â
âSeven or eight,â I said.
âAnd who are they? Town guard? Somebody else?â
âIt was Gart, and those who follow him. The man from the fight at the inn.â
âAnd why is he after us?â
I snorted. âCoin, of course. And heâs just after me. And maybe Tamara, if he knows what she is.â
At the sound of her name, I felt Tamara flinch. âThereâs a bounty on me as well?â
I shook my head. âI donât think so. But Gart appears to be one of those who dislikes our kind. If he knows about you, I doubt he would let you go easily.â
All of a sudden, Thaddeus pulled his horse up, going from a fast walk to a full stop in less than a second. Thinking that something must have been wrong, I stopped as well.
âIf theyâre just after you,â the man said. âThen why am I so afraid? Theyâre not after meâ¦â
I shouldnât have been surprised. âYou are free to stay or go as you will. You can even keep the old nag, if you choose to go. Iâve said it before, but I will say it again.
