I POURED everything I had into our relationship after the night of the play. I did it without questioning my motives much anymore.

It didn’t take long for me to find myself using my boyfriend or my lover to describe Nate. Nouns were no longer so challenging to find.

We went out a lot, to movies, plays, concerts, bowling, and of course for a lot of meals. Our goal was to try every type of cuisine the city had to offer before the end of the year.

I didn’t hide at home or in gay clubs with him like I’d done with my past boyfriends. I knew hiding was a deal breaker for most gay men, which was why hooking up had been easier the last several years.

But Nate was out and quietly insisted through his actions that we become a part of nearly every facet of each other’s lives. He respected my desire to stay discreet at my job, but I soon met his closest friends, the geishas from the teahouse, and other regulars in his life like baristas and his favorite salad guy at the local deli. We ended up spending most of our free time together, but it was at my place or at some establishment, never his place.

When he finally invited me over for the first time, I could tell he was nervous from how his voice wavered on the phone as he relayed his address. I had yet to meet his roommates, but today was the day.

I drove up to his place and, as requested, texted Nate to let him know I was out front. The building was run-down but looked like it had once been a sought after location. Spanish influence, terra cotta tiles, and a courtyard where neighbors could easily socialize. The setup made it look like a building where a lot of fun could be had.

I got out of the car just as Nate walked under the arched walkway and smiled at me. It looked forced. He hugged me and pulled me down to give me a perfunctory kiss. “How are you?” I asked as I skated my hand down his back in an attempt to calm him.

“Uh…. Look, the apartment is small and messy, nothing like what you have, so….”

“Hey, it’s okay. I’m not here to compare or judge.” I threaded our fingers together.

Nate walked toward the courtyard, tugging me along behind him. “And my roommates… they’re loud and—”

“Nate. Please stop worrying.” I pulled him to a halt on the path. “I’ve never seen you like this. What are you freaking out about?”

“That you’re going to walk in there and wonder what the hell you’re doing with such a disaster of a man.”

I thumbed over his temple and pressed a kiss between his creased brows. “That won’t happen, but if you don’t want to do this, we don’t have to. This may come as a surprise to you, but I already know you’re a creative type.” I smirked when he looked up at me with stained cheeks.
