Molly Mode

I HEARD MY DAD ON THE PHONE THIS afternoon,” Lowry told Molly as they made their way to Howlfair Orphanage. A sudden moan of wind tilted the trees along Cecily Craven Street. “He was talking to his boss about something that happened at Mr Wetherill’s store. The shop’s been closed – that’s why Carl had to move back to the orphanage.”

“Carl hates the orphanage,” Molly said. “He got beaten up all the time there.”

“Well, the police have been at Wetherill’s store and they’ve locked the place up. Whatever’s happened there, the tourist board wants to keep it secret. I asked Dad about it and – can you believe it! – he sent me to my room without any dinner!”

“Just for asking a question?”

“Yes!” said Lowry, kicking a stone. “And also for eavesdropping on him from behind a door with a cup against my ear. So, anyway, even though I was literally wasting away from starvation, I couldn’t leave you at Lucinda’s mercy.” She took another vol-au-vent from her bag and popped it into her mouth. “So I sneaked out of the window and came straight over to rescue you so we could rescue Carl. Or at least find out what’s going on. Hey, is that thunder?”

“It’s my stomach rumbling.”

“You should’ve had some of your buffet food,” Lowry said, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. “Seriously, those were twelve of the finest pastries I’ve ever eaten. Maybe Carl can share his orphanage gruel with you. Oh! Speaking of sharing…”

Lowry rummaged in her schoolbag and found a book. She handed it to Molly.

“I asked Dad if he had any books about Howlfair graveyards,” said Lowry. “Unbelievably, he did. I said it was for a school project.”

The book was titled Ethelhael Burials. There was a TOURIST BOARD stamp on a label on the back. “Um, thanks,” said Molly. “Does it mention John Broome or the Silentman?”

“Dunno,” said Lowry, licking a finger. “But you can use it to help you make up some complicated theory about where to start looking for John Broome’s stinky corpse. You can hopefully blag your way into buying yourself more time with Lucinda.”

Molly flipped through the pages. “Not bad work, Evans.”

“You’re welcome. And, hey, sorry about getting you banned from the library. I’ve been thinking a lot about the whole werewolf thing, and I went into Molly Mode…”

“What’s Molly Mode?” said Molly, slipping the book into her backpack. “It sounds like a French fashion shop.”

“It’s when a problem is vexing my brain and I try to solve it by pretending to be you. I thought: how would Molly research the Kroglin Werewolf if she actually took me seriously? ’Cause obviously I’ve gone through my family’s photo albums, but I’ve never traipsed round the library looking in, you know, those things that you like…”

“Books.”

“That’s it – books,” said Lowry. “And, well, I don’t want to speak too soon, but before you showed up, I managed to do some research and it’s looking like you were right
