Central themes

A central theme in Bourdieu’s work is the relations between culture, stratification, and power.

Any society is structured along competitive class and status hierarchies, where individuals and groups struggle over valued resources. In that struggle, economic assets are not the only resource that reproduces and upholds the social stratification—but so are cultural resources. Cultural taste, symbols and practices, such as language, literature, and taste in art, literature, clothing, and food create and reinforce social distinctions. Bourdieu looks at how social struggle is expressed in these symbolic classifications, and how cultural taste and practices place individuals and groups into social hierarchies. He also analyzes how they pursue their interests within these hierarchies, and by doing so, help to reproduce them.
