Rumour

Rumour and gossip are closely allied. A rumour is a story or report of uncertain or doubtful truth that is currently in circulation. Gossiping can transmit rumours. Rumour can be based on gossip, but not necessarily. In terms of inciting mistrust, rumour is a sharper and more sophisticated tool than gossip. However, fundamentally, both are good methods for developing and changing social representations. The people who engage with them also tend to be seeking to satisfy similar needs.
