Duncan – Stonebay

The four of them had made there way through the forest and to the main road to the capital, nearly in silence. Words that had been spoken couldn’t be taken back, no matter how much they may have been regretted. He watched Cailean and Amy ahead of them, then turned to Callum. “A word?” He asked, eyebrow raised. He nodded, then called out to his sister.

“Cailean, wait on us. We’ll just be a minute.” Amy stiffened, but she didn’t turn to look at the pair. Callum motioned for Duncan to follow him down an alley before the main gates. Once they were out of earshot of the others, he turned his attention to Duncan. “What?”

“Some other day, we are going to have a very, very long conversation about what you said back there. And if you ever do lay a finger on Ambrosia, I’ll put you in the ground myself.” Ice hung on his words. He crossed his arms over his chest. “Guards murdered because an intruder got away?” He raised an eyebrow at his oldest companion. “She’s his obsession.” It was a fact now, he’d suspected, but if Absalon lost his temper and murdered two guards, that was bad news for her. “I don’t think they know where she ran off to, nor do I bet they don’t want it getting out that it was a female intruder or that she was able to escape him.”

“I’ve still got eyes on them.” Callum said, looking over Duncan’s shoulders. “But I don’t think we want to let them get out of our sight. We get this information, we get our asses back. She can’t come with us when we go for him.” He clinched his jaw, trying to control his emotions. It wasn’t easy where she was concerned.

“Do we still have our person on the inside?” There was a steady, cold rage inside him. He was furious with Callum, but he’d let that go for now. He wanted to focus on getting them through this intel run, back safe, and then he’d consider how best to keep Amy safe. He would put the sword to Absalon himself, even if it meant his death, before he’d let that monster lay a finger on her. If he were to be honest with himself though, he was angry with himself. Part of him agreed with what Callum had said. It was his fault that she stayed. He should have controlled himself.

“It’s been a while since we got any messages, but I think we do.” Callum kept his eyes glued on his sister and Amy, but Duncan could tell his mind was working over all their options. “We can just hope your wealthy benefactor still believes in the cause.”

“Callum.” He put his hand on his shoulder. “I need to know you’re going to protect both of them, even if that means leaving me behind.” He squeezed. Callum glanced over to him.

“Likewise.” He nodded. “We protect what is most dear to us. No matter the cost.
