That night, as I lay in Megan’s bed, I could hear her breathing softly next to me. I couldn’t sleep. It wasn’t because I was uncomfortable—in fact I was really comfortable. There was just something about the people in this house that made me feel good.

I hadn’t had a friend like Megan in a long time. She was caring and supportive, the way a friend should be. But Luke had been my first friend in the neighborhood… maybe even more than that. I didn’t know. I hated to think that I’d hurt his feelings tonight. After the movie had ended, he’d gone straight to his room without saying anything to us.

The truth was, if Megan hadn’t been sitting there too, I would have let him hold my hand—or my pinky—forever. It felt good. It was a sign that maybe he liked me the way that I liked him.

Either that or he was just flirting with me like he did with everyone else. For all I knew, Luke held pinkies with all Megan’s friends and that’s why she was so against it.

One thing was for certain. It didn’t matter what I did. I was going to end up making one of my friends mad at me, and I hated that. It was a feeling I knew all too well.
