What? You Didn’t

Bring Any Toys?

Meredith misses Jess’s cheery presence, but her body doesn’t miss having a gooseberry in the house. She launches herself at William. Much hilarity and some lovemaking later, she asks, “So, do you like her?”

“Yes, she’s nice. Different to you,” he kisses her, “but nice.” He winks. “Now, are you going to show me the evidence?”

“What evidence?”

“The video of your presentation!”

“How do you know I have one?” Her tone is guarded. He just grins a knowing grin. “You’re such a smartarse.”

Meredith doesn’t really want to, but it was his idea, and she’s had a lot of positive comments about it, so she lets him persuade her. She watches with trepidation, but William seems both interested and impressed. He asks about each of her colleagues and pauses the video to get her to expand on some points.

Afterwards he asks, “Have you ever seen one of those programs about meerkats or mongeese?”

“No.”

He grabs his laptop and fires it up. “Should have a shortcut here somewhere.”

She’s happy to change over to watching some of her favourite animals rather than herself, especially when William works out how to feed the stream to her television. Several times he pauses and replays scenes in which the meerkats are hunting dangerous prey or trying to drive off a poisonous snake. “See how, when one is unsure, another steps forward?” he asks.

“Yes. They’re cute.”

“Well, that’s how you and Emily should learn to work in a presentation.” His enthusiasm is brimming. “One takes the attention while the other gathers her thoughts.”

“So you think we’re meerkats.” Meredith asks impishly.

He grins wolfishly in response. “It’s politer than calling you chimps – they all do the same thing.” He doesn’t complain in the slightest when she bashes his shoulder with her fist.

“You are such a monkey,” she tells him.

“Ape, I’m an ape. ‘Ook-ay’.”

“So you wouldn’t be interested in getting up to any more monkey business, then?” she asks coyly.

His face lets her know that he would.

“And did your apeship bring any more exciting things to teach me with?”

“I’m afraid not, I thought as Jess was over, sorry,” he hadn’t been sure how she’d feel about that sort of thing with Jess staying, “Next time.”

Meredith is disappointed. The adventures of recent days have been eye-openers, and she definitely wishes to continue.

“Hmm.” He nuzzles up to her. “I’m sure we can find some way of amusing you anyway.” He kisses her cheek. “Even if we have to make do with the bare necessities.” He sings the last two words and tickles her neck with his stubble.

After dinner, they watch the 4K copy of Guardians of the Galaxy that William has brought. Meredith agrees to watch the sequel because she loves the soundtrack and she loves baby Groot. William jokingly threatens to steal her television, then settles for swearing to make an upgrade at home.
