CHAPTER TEN

VANIR

The lame quote about seeing your life flash before your eyes rings in my head as I await the ambulance to get here.

I fucked up again tonight without meaning to. I was jealous seeing her with two men and didn’t even think. I reacted without thinking.

Rushing after her, I saw it happen. I wanted to go after the driver, but she needed me.

With Kraken’s help, I didn’t realize he’d followed me out of the bar, the two of us keep Vail immobile while getting her out of the wreckage. Kraken and I lay her on the sidewalk, and I check her over, checking for her pulse. I take a moment to breathe, feeling it in her neck.

I’m not a praying man, but I thank Odin that she’s still got that beat.

I’ll never get the sight of Vail’s car being T-boned, then the back passenger door on the driver’s side hit a streetlight pole, out of my head. How the hell she survived the impact of the other vehicle slamming into the passenger side then hitting that damn light, I don’t know. She’s damn lucky. I’ve seen accidents where many people don’t make it.

Shit, a few years ago, Dag, Rati, and I helped assist in one of the worst accidents that will forever be burned in my brain. We’d been getting our qualifications recertified when the call came in. I’m not as big into the whole thing as Dag and Rati. After that accident, I decided to keep up my certification, but I was done. I didn’t want to handle medical shit anymore. I didn’t want to get into another wreck like that one. It wasn’t just bad. It was horrendous.

Got to the scene, one truck was several yards up the road on the edge of the two-lane road. A tractor-trailer had jack-knifed and hit another truck. The passenger was trapped on their side, but it was the driver, DOA, on the scene. By luck, the body had been intact but in the back seat. We all knew if he’d been wearing the seat belt, the family wouldn’t have been able to have an open casket.

I remember hearing the cops talk about the man and who he was. My brothers and I ended up going to the funeral. We showed our support. I’ll never forget the sight of all the people there. All seats were taken, the walls throughout the building shoulder to shoulder, even people piling in by the door. You could all but feel the love and sorrow in the room for the man.

Shaking my head, I push thoughts of that wreckage out of my head to focus on my woman. My Vail.

Paramedics arrive, and Kraken all but drags me away from Vail’s unconscious body.

“Come on, man, keep it together,” he tells me calmly. “We’ll follow them to the hospital. You don’t lock your emotions down, they’re not gonna let you go back with her.”

“I’m good,” I state, giving him a nod, but I don’t take my eyes off Vail.
