Chapter 4

Branch carried her all the way to the yeti village, even though it took all day to travel there. It was kind of like a carriage ride.

She was learning that yetis must have some nomadic tendencies. He moved quickly with long strides, and she sensed that they were traveling at a superhuman pace.

As the sun dropped below the horizon, Branch stepped into a cave, not unlike the cave system that they bathed in. “We are almost there,” he murmured.

“Shouldn’t I walk, then? Aren’t you tired of carrying me?”

“I want to keep carrying you. I will never tire of it. I am strong enough to carry my mate.”

She rolled her eyes. She should’ve known it would be this way with a younger guy.

He finally set her on her feet, and she surveyed her surroundings with a gasp. They were in a cavern far larger than the one they’d bathed in. Stalagmites and stalactites lined the walls and ceiling, slowly dripping water into the multiple pools that dotted the floor.

All Kaylee cared about were the people, though. Yetis and humans filled the space, and the roars and shrieks of the yeti children echoed off the walls.

Some of them glared at Branch.

She touched his forearm, stroking the fur there. “How do you want to handle this?” she murmured.

He sighed. “I do not know. I–they all hate me now, Kaylee. I am sorry.”

“You said I’m safe here, right? No matter what?”

He nodded. “Of course.”

“Is there somewhere we’ll stay tonight? Like a room, or something?” He nodded. “Then why don’t you go get it ready for us? And I’ll go introduce myself. Try to make friends. I’m sure you’re tired after walking all day, carrying me. Make sure our room’s ready, then rest.”

He shook his head. “Not tired, I–”

“Uh-uh,” she said, pressing a finger to his lips. “You were such a good boy last night. Very obedient. Do you remember what I said I’d do to reward you for being so good?” He groaned against her finger, nodding. “Good. Then surely you’ll have no problem doing a simple thing like resting in bed while I socialize? If I find you haven’t done as I asked, then I won’t be able to reward you.”

“I will do as you ask, little mate. I will be a good boy.”

Oh god. She was grateful that he turned away before she did something crazy.

Kaylee strolled down to where a human woman was bathing a yeti baby in a pool. She seemed like a non-threatening person to talk to.

“Hi, I’m Kaylee,” she said, not waiting for an invitation to sit.

The woman gave her a sideways glance. “Lana.”

“Cute little one,” Kaylee tried. “Is–”

“I should tell you,” Lana interrupted. “Your man. He tried to fight Gronk for me. Would’ve kidnapped me.”

Oh for Christ’s sake. What were the fucking odds. “Ah. Yeah, he uh. He’s very remorseful. And I’m sorry. That must’ve been, uh…”

“You know? And you’re with him? Willingly?”

“Yeah. He told me. It was one of the first things he told me. Um.
