Chapter Twelve
EDEN
Awareness crept across my brain and I cracked my eyes open. They were dry and gritty like sand had blown into them, and then Iâd slept for a week. My head pounded. A hangoverâsomething that rarely happened. Damn Viv. I should know better than to drink with her. And my stomach hurt. A general soreness.
What the hell had happened last night?
I rolled over, wincing at the overall soreness in my body. I felt like Iâd gone a few rounds with a boxer. I shifted so I could look down my body, expecting to see a myriad of bruises, but I didnât see anything except my Brideâs Most Trusted Bitches T-shirt and jeans under the sheets. How had I gotten into bed and not undressed? Last night must have gotten wilder than I thought.
I glanced at my bedside table to see a bottle of water and aspirin along with a note that read, take me when you wake up. I grabbed three and swallowed them with a healthy gulp of the water, resting my head against the back of the bed.
The pounding started again, and I realized it wasnât just from my head but from the front door downstairs. I slowly swung my legs out of bed and pushed myself to a sitting position, waiting to see if I was okay. When the room didnât spin too wildly, I got to my feet, stumbled downstairs, and opened the door. Josh stood there with a cardboard tray of coffee and a bag that smelled like cinnamon.
He grinned broadly. âGood morning, killer. You look better than I expected. How are you feeling?â
I stared at him dumbly for several moments, and he chuckled. âItâs freezing out here, Eden. Can I come in?â
I nodded and stepped aside so he could come in. âWhy are you here?â
I followed him into the kitchen, desperately wanting what was in that bag and the coffee. I was willing to deal with Josh to get it, even knowing I looked a fright. That was his problem for coming over so damned early.
âYou look fine, Eden, and itâs not that early. Itâs actually ten.â
I glanced at the clock above the microwave in shock. Iâd never slept that late. âWhat the hell happened last night?â
He gestured to my kitchen table. âWell, you defended my honor with Crystal Hennessy. Thank you for that, by the way. And you almost started a bar fight with Crystal. It was the highlight of the evening.â
âOh, God.â I sank to the table and let my head fall gently to the top. I was going to kill Viv.
He nodded and placed a cup of coffee on the table next to me. âHave a few sips of this first. Itâll help. Did you have the aspirin I left you?â
I rolled my head to the side and stared at it suspiciously. âYes, thank you. Is there alcohol in here?â
He laughed again, clearly having way too much fun at my expense. âDefinitely not. I think you should lay off the alcohol, at least tequila, for the next twenty-four hours or so.
