INSURANCE.

That information registered with Evan like a punch. And left him with a bad feeling. A really big one.

Cops learned to trust bad feelings, because they were often intuition’s way of explaining what wasn’t clear to the brain, and often turned out to be more reliable than hard information. Still, evidence was critical.

The word insurance brought Blaine instantly to mind. But Blaine had only borrowed from his holding account, not from loan sharks. And judging by the talk of payback and the possibility of not getting paid, he guessed that the men on the tape were part of a loan shark’s organization.

And then the obvious occurred to him. Maybe Blaine had borrowed the money from his holding account to pay back a loan shark.

Evan dismissed the thought. It was foolish to speculate until he had more information.

“Tell me what you know about your boss.” He pushed the tape recorder aside and faced Beazie across the small space between them.

“He was married, no children, always seemed honest. Most of our clients really liked dealing with him.” She looked tired and upset, but he couldn’t stop yet. “What else do you want to know?”

“When’d you go to work for him?”

“About two years ago. He’d just opened the Boston agency, and a man I was dating recommended me for the job of office manager.”

He asked the next logical question. “Who was that?”

“His name was Blaine Turner,” she replied. “He sold insurance, too. They’d been friends since they worked together for another company.”

Evan heard Blaine’s name, but not the rest of it. If the word insurance had struck him like a punch, his brother’s name hit him like a tree trunk to the gut. Gordon Hathaway and Blaine had been involved.

That had to mean Hathaway had intended that the tape get to Evan, and not Evans, as Beazie had misunderstood. It provided proof that there’d been a plot afoot to kill his brother—even though it hadn’t been carried out. The automobile accident had probably occurred before they could put the plan into action.

And then something else occurred to him. Something that felt even worse than the tree trunk to his stomach. Beazie said she’d been “dating” Blaine. He remembered that Blaine had tried to explain away his “borrowing” funds from the holding account by saying that his girlfriend was expensive.

It was hard to equate that kind of woman with Beazie, but the evidence was clear. The fact that Evan didn’t want to deal with it wouldn’t change it.

His brain was chaotic with this new information, and his heart in turmoil. He got to his feet, needing to move, to put some distance between him and Beazie.

He made it as far as the doorway, then turned to face her, leaning a shoulder against the new molding. “You dated Blaine Turner?” he asked. He believed she hadn’t committed murder, but now to learn she’d endangered his nephews’ family life…

“Yes,” she replied, watching him warily. “Why?”

“He was married.”

“No, he wasn’t,” she denied calmly. “We dated for a couple of months.
