CHAPTER EIGHT
Four months later . . .
A junior-league soccer game was underway in the community field in Smallville. The crowds in the bleachers cheered enthusiastically as Whitney scored another goal, putting his team ahead. He whooped in celebration.
“Show-off,” Clark muttered.
He watched enviously from the Kent farm many miles away. The roof had been fixed for months, but his parents still wouldn’t let him join a team with the other kids. While Whitney and the rest enjoyed their game, Clark was stuck in an empty field all by himself, viewing the game with his telescopic vision. He listened to the cheers of the crowd. Everybody sounded like they were having a great time.
It wasn’t fair.
Then again, he admitted, it wouldn’t really be fair for him to play against ordinary kids, not with all he could do. He could win every game if he wanted to, without even trying. The only person he could really compete against was himself.
Like today.
It was a warm, muggy spring afternoon, and Clark felt like seeing what he could do. The fields had already been harvested, so there was open space all around him. He scanned the vicinity for miles around to make sure no one else was nearby, then kicked the soccer ball he’d brought with him.
The ball shot across the fields like a missile, going over a hundred miles an hour. Clark chased after it, running even faster than the ball. No ordinary person could have caught up with the ball, let alone pass it, but Clark intercepted the ball and kicked it back the way it had come. He ran at full speed to meet the ball a few miles away and kicked it back across the fields again.
“I’d like to see Whitney do that!” he said.
He raced back and forth across the dusty fields, playing soccer with himself. He looked like a blurry streak zipping across entire acres in a matter of seconds. Once, the ball almost got past him, but he managed to block it before it went zooming all the way to Smallville. He headed it back toward the farm. The sturdy rubber ball felt like a party balloon against his forehead.
I should try kicking around a bowling ball, he thought. That might be more of a challenge.
Clark enjoyed testing his abilities, even if there was no one around to cheer him on. It wasn’t often that he got to be himself this way. It felt as natural as breathing. The ball went flying over the farm and Clark jumped over the barn to chase after it, clearing the large red building in a single bound.
If only Lana and the others could see him now!
He had to be careful not to kick the ball too hard. He had destroyed a couple of balls that way, before he got more control of his strength. Another ball had ended up crashing through a window at an office in town. Nobody had ever figured out where it had come from.
Clark still felt guilty about that.
